Message from Head of School
A Poetic Sendoff to Winter Break
Brendan Largay, Head of School
Post Date: December 21, 2018
This poem, a wintertime favorite of mine, is filled with the promise of what lies ahead, the magic of the season, and the beautiful perspective of childhood. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and that your break is a restful, restorative, and delightful one for your family.
Winter Poem
once a snowflake fell
on my brow and
it so much and
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
and
still and was a flower
– Nikki Giovanni
We look forward to welcoming you all back in 2019! Happy New Year, everyone.
Ms. Henry leads the pre-kindergarten class during the first sharing assembly in the Barn.

Looking Ahead
Early Birds Moves to the Barn on January 7
We are excited to start the new year with our Eary Birds program moving to the Barn! Early Birds has grown significantly and we welcome about 70 students every morning. The move will allow us to continue to have space for reading, games, crafting, and chatting. Importantly, it will also allow us to open the gym early to all our students, pre-k to grade 8, for early morning movement.
Some important information:
- Early Birds opens at 7:30 a.m.
- Students may wait in the heated Barn vestibule if they arrive a few minutes before 7:30 a.m.
- Middle school students arriving before 7:45 a.m. and lower school students arriving before 8:15 a.m. will need to be dropped off at the Barn.
- Students should bring their coats and backpacks to the Barn, the Schoolhouse will not be open to drop off belongings.
- Dismissal change forms are available at the front desk from 7:30 a.m. on. Changes can also be sent to attendance@belmontday.org.
- All middle school students will continue to sign in at the Barn until 7:45 a.m. or at the front desk from 7:45 to 8:00 a.m.
- All lower school students will check in and shake hands with the teacher on duty.
- Schoolhouse front door greeting will continue
- All students will walk back to the Schoolhouse with their backpacks and other belongings
- Middle school students will leave the Barn and enter the Schoolhouse through the
third grade door at 7:45 a.m. - Students in pre-k to grade two will leave the Barn with a teacher and enter the Schoolhouse through the walkway door at 8:15 a.m.
- Students in grades three to five will leave the Barn with a teacher and enter the Schoolhouse through the
third grade door at 8:15 a.m.
Please contact Deborah Brissenden dbrissenden@belmontday.org if you have any questions or comments.
New Traffic/Dismissal Pattern Begins January 7
- All traffic will enter the new driveway from Concord Avenue.
- The driveway is single lane only.
- We will dismiss from two doors: the PAC door (the door inside the PAC that opens to the back parking lot) and the front door.
- At the bend in the driveway, just past the stone wall (cones will identify), traffic will split into two lanes. The right lane is for vehicles picking up at the PAC door; the left lane is for vehicles picking up at the front door.
- A faculty/staff member on traffic duty will help cars navigate the correct lane in the first few weeks.
- Reminder: Day School Lane remains a two-way lane for resident traffic, so please stay in a single lane as you depart campus.
Dismissal Doors and Traffic Flow Map
The PAC Door:
- The right-hand lane will proceed to the stop sign and then turn right through the upper parking lot, past the Barn entrance and walkway to begin to pick up at the PAC doors.
- Students will be dismissed through the walkway doors in winter and through the PAC doors in fall and spring.
- During the winter term, pre-k to grade two students will be seated in the walkway hallway.
- During the winter term, students in grades three to five will be seated in the area outside the PAC.
- During the fall and spring terms, all students will be dismissed from the PAC stage.
- Buckling into car seats will be done by the adults picking up students, not by faculty or staff on duty.
- Cars will exit the PAC line, and on the instruction of the faculty/staff member on traffic duty, will drive straight and into the lower parking lot to exit onto Day School Lane at the top of the circle. Another faculty/staff member positioned at the top of the circle will direct traffic exiting from the lower lot and the front door.
The Front Door:
- The left-hand lane will proceed to the stop sign and then move straight through Coolidge Way towards the front door.
- Students will either wait inside or be seated on the benches outside the front door.
- Buckling into car seats will be done by the adults picking up the students, not by faculty or staff on duty.
- Cars will exit the front door line and proceed around the circle. On instruction from the faculty or staff member on traffic duty, they will exit the school heading down Day School Lane.
- Receptionist Barbara Carey will create new lists of students for each door over winter break and email new dismissal spots to families.
- Parking spaces facing the PAC will become partially restricted, with parking only from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
- Please keep in mind that arriving at 3:35 p.m. rather than close to 3:00 p.m. often enables a faster pick up.
- Our campus is a no-idling zone.
- 4:30 p.m. dismissal will be from the front door for students in after school and from the PAC door for athletics. Parents picking up siblings from after school and athletics will in most cases default to the younger student’s location.
- BDS buses (Boston, Cambridge, Belmont) will continue to be dismissed from the
sixth grade classroom corner. - Visiting team buses will drop at the Barn and park beside the B&G garage.
- Friday dismissal will follow the same dismissal pattern as above.

ATHLETICS
Fencing Comes Up Just Short Against Beaver
John O’Neill, Director of Athletics
After back-to-back undefeated seasons, Belmont Day’s 12-match winning streak was snapped this week. The Blue & Gold fell 15-12 at home against Beaver, winning four out of nine bouts in all three weapons. The last loss for Belmont Day fencing came nearly three years ago in 2016, and although this week’s result was disappointing, coaches Adam Brewer and Kathy Jo Solomon were encouraged by what they saw on the strip. Both coaches are confident the team will be able to flip the script when they travel to Beaver later in the season once the team gets more experience under their belts. Highlights from the match included newcomer Devon Holman who won two out of three epee bouts (4-5, 5-3, 5-1

ARTS
From Consumers to Producers
Kurt Robinson, Innovation and Arts Teacher
Students in sixth grade began their journey from merely being consumers of technology to controlling and producing their technology experiences. The students are learning the Python programming language and used it to create a simple text-based, choose-your-own-adventure game. Now they are mastering the Circuit Playground Express to control lights, play sounds, and turn motors using the built-in sensors for temperature, light, sound, and motion. After winter break, students will be using the Innovation Studio in the Barn to work with a variety of robotics projects to program movements, music, and flashing lights. Stop by to check it out!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
New Procedure with the Addition of the Barn
The PE department is very excited about the recent addition of the Barn to our available facilities. It is a significant change and we are being mindful to establish the best new procedures for the students and space. The Barn presents a new experience in that our students will be leaving the Schoolhouse and traveling to another building throughout the day. Because of this travel, we are requiring each student to carry over a pair of sneakers that are different from the shoes they wore to school. This will ensure students have proper athletic footwear (rather than boots) for PE class. This will also help us keep the new gym floor dry and safe and help to preserve the condition of the wood flooring. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. King
We are planning a celebration in January of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy that honors his dedication to service.
BOOK IT FORWARD will engage students in cross-graded partner groups on January 11. A media drive—new and gently used books, CDs, DVDs, records, and video games—is underway to support two local organizations, More Than Words and Reach Out and Read at Children’s Hospital. During the cross-graded partner time, students will learn more about Dr. King’s story and legacy and work together to decorate book bags or make bookmarks.
Donation notes: For Reach Out and Read, we can accept new and gently used books for children 6 months to middle school age in any language. No religious, racial, or political themes. For More Than Words, new and gently used books for children of all ages and adults are welcome. Other media must not be damaged. A donation box is in the Schoolhouse Gallery.
On Friday, January 25 students will share their projects and what they have learned about Dr. King. We will also host a speaker from one of the agencies we are working with.
Thank you for your participation!
