Opening Message
A New Year, A New Call To Our Values
Brendan Largay, Head of School
Post Date: January 10, 2025
Happy 2025, Belmont Day!
The new calendar year is upon us, and in just a few short days, it is clear that there is boundless energy in our halls and classrooms. To start the year, I have had the great pleasure of being invited into those classrooms for morning greetings. Ask a kindergartener about the “sea turtle greeting,” it’s fantastic! The joy and vibrancy of a new year are alive and well here on the hill.
A new year also provides an opportunity for reflection, a chance to grow, to take on something new, or to renew a commitment to a goal you’ve had in the past. Yes, the new year is an excellent opportunity to take stock and imagine something better for the days ahead.
As we open our new calendars with hopeful joy here on campus, my heart has also been in Los Angeles and Southern California this week. For all of the frigid days and nights we’ve been experiencing here in the Boston area, thousands of people in communities throughout Southern California have evacuated their homes to escape wildfires burning through their neighborhoods.
I recently learned that two PK-8 schools, whose heads are fellow members of ESHA (Elementary School Heads Association), have lost their schools to the fires, and several more have students and families in their communities who have lost their homes. I suspect that no emergency plan or handbook could have adequately prepared those schools for the scope of this unprecedented devastation. As these school leaders search for answers, schools like ours, thousands of miles away, can consider how we might help.
I am working with heads around the country to offer assistance. We are considering clothing or toy drives for displaced students, offering virtual classes (math works the same no matter which state you’re in), a national design challenge to mitigate climate change, and more. In moments like these, the best resolution is to lean into our agency to do anything that might help those in need.
Some of our community members have family or friends directly impacted by the fires, and I send them love, strength, and support. If any of the loyal Scoop readership has ideas or knows of organizations doing good work supporting the victims of the wildfires, please reach out to me. In its effort to empower meaningful contributions, Belmont Day is eager to participate.
So, in 2025, perhaps our collective resolution might be to serve others rather than to be served, to care for those who we may not witness experiencing our care, and to make Belmont Day a better place by ensuring that schools on the other side of the country can safely welcome their students and families back to communities of learning.

SUMMER CAMP
Don’t Delay! Register Now for Summer at BDS
Camp registration is now open for returning campers and all Belmont Day families.
School-year families enjoy access to priority spots in our summer camp programs and our Swim & Tennis Association membership. Our camp registration period is extremely competitive. Spots will be available for Belmont Day families through February vacation week in our general day camp, while specialty, sports, and Journeys camps have limited spaces and are subject to first-come, first-served availability even for BDS families.
Families of returning Belmont Day students can register now using the account on CampMinder they’ve used in previous years.
Belmont Day families new to our summer camp programs will need to register by directly contacting the camp leadership team before January 21, 2025, when registration opens to the public. Please email summer@belmontday.org; we will get the information needed to register your child. If you’re unfamiliar with our camp programs, please visit the Summer Programs page of the BDS website for more information.

Learning Updates
First Graders Return to Math Stations
After returning from winter break, our first grade mathematicians are easing their way back into classroom routines by moving through stations. They are reviewing concepts with two-dimensional shapes and exploring similarities and differences between three-dimensional shapes. Students are also practicing their fact fluency on MathFact Lab and spiraling back to previously learned concepts in their workbooks. Once the new concepts with solid shapes are mastered, we will return to working with numbers, focusing on addition and subtraction through 20 and eventually 40.
– Julia Fox, first grade teacher
Eighth Graders Write Children’s Stories in Latin
In their current unit, eighth grade Latin students are learning two grammatical structures that often work together: vocative nouns (direct address) and imperative verbs (commands). After playing “Simon dicit” (Simon Says) to recognize the different forms of each word, students began working on authoring a children’s book to share their learning. The simple sentence structure of children’s picture books provides the perfect medium for students to demonstrate their understanding of these short phrases while also demonstrating their mastery of other language concepts. Using Canva, students could develop a plot and focus on the Latin language elements while also incorporating graphic design elements.

Arts Update: Sixth Graders Perform Original Play
Sixth graders in theater arts reached an exciting milestone this year with the commissioning of an original one-act play, The Worst Fairy Tale Ever! by professional playwright Todd Wallinger. Made possible through the generous support of a Lenesa Leana Endowment for Innovative and Collaborative Education grant, this project brought a unique story specifically written for our students to showcase their talents and support our trimester-based groups of eight.
The benefits of working with a tailor-made script like this are endless. The story was crafted with our students in mind, ensuring every character has depth, humor, and a chance to shine. The play’s ensemble focus aligns perfectly with our goal of encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and creative expression among our young actors.
The accompanying photo captures one of our first-semester casts striking their best character poses—an early step in bringing these hilarious and heartwarming fairy tale misadventures to life. We can’t wait to see how each group interprets this playful script throughout the year!
The sixth grade theater arts program continues to inspire confidence, creativity, and a love of storytelling, and we are proud to offer this extraordinary experience to our students. Bravo to our young thespians for diving into this one-of-a-kind opportunity with enthusiasm and energy!

Athletics Update: Squash Program Expands
Launched a year ago in tandem with the return of badminton, the middle school squash program has expanded significantly in its second year. Serving 34 athletes, the program grew into two teams this year and has 10 trips scheduled to collegiate squash facilities. Before winter break, the team took four trips to Havard, then traveled to MIT this week and will do so again next week. Finally, there are four trips planned at Brandeis to finish off their season. “The ability to expose our athletes to a new sport has been really exciting,” head coach Abbey Nyland notes. “The athletes continue to improve each time we step on the court, and some show real potential.” With growth like this, there’s the potential that squash could become an interscholastic offering in the future. For now, athletes will continue to refine their skills, improve their fitness, and have some fun along the way. The badminton/squash team is led by a handful of eighth grade athletes, including Melisa Adhikari, Adam Ahmed, Isla Smith, Griffin Targum, Jack Ward, and Ethan Zipkin. Adam Ahmed competes internationally and has helped spread his passion for the sport to his peers who are just beginning.

Pre-k Families Enjoy Warm Winter Portfolio Share
On Thursday, pre-kindergarten students hosted their families for their annual Winter Portfolio Share. Among twinkling lights and a (pretend) roaring fire, children cozied up with their parents and reflected on some of their accomplishments so far this school year. Some of the projects featured in our portfolios this fall included attributes and patterns in math, our retelling and performance of Thank You, Omu!, woodland walks, and work in the innovation lab with Teacher Conroy. Even with freezing temperatures outside, the pre-kindergarten classroom was aglow with warmth, light, and learning.

Family Films from Around the World Set to Premiere
Belmont Day is proud to sponsor Belmont World Film’s 22nd Family Festival, which features some of the world’s most imaginative live-action and animated films for and about children ages 3-12. Screenings will take place on January 18 at the West Newton Cinema, January 19 and 26 at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, and January 20 at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge.
The line-up features films from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Films include multicultural casts representing five different continents.
Artist-in-residence David Feiss, co-director with previous artist-in-residence Cinzia Angelini of the recently released animated film HITPIG!, starring Jason Sudeikis, will take part in a Q&A following the film’s screening on Sunday, January 19 in Arlington.
