Opening Message
Welcome Back, Belmont Day
Brendan Largay, Head of School
Post Date: January 7, 2022
I suspect this winter break was a welcome one for many: a chance to take a breath, reflect on the year that has passed, and see more clearly all that we hope for in 2022. For me, amid that reflection, I was struck by the news of Desmond Tutu’s passing.
Growing up at a time of less globalization and less immediacy of information about the world, I remember learning of the atrocity of apartheid through fragments of news stories shared by my parents and teachers and marveling at the courage of three men: Nelson Mandela, Stephen Biko, and Desmond Tutu. I was in high school when the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established.
By then, the horrors of apartheid had placed South Africa at the forefront of international news, and the notion of justice in partnership with reconciliation seemed to take the world by surprise. Such a notion—that true peace in a torn nation required truth and reconciliation—was visionary, and Archbishop Tutu stood on the thrust of the world’s stage to champion it.
“We can be human only together. A person is a person to other persons. We so desperately long for all of us to learn that we are meant for one another. We are meant for complementarity.”
At the start of 2022, only a day removed from the one year anniversary of an attack—the very antithesis of complementarity—on the United States Capitol, Tutu’s vision stands as a reminder of the power of hope, the power of our humanity, and the power of forgiveness.
A parent shared a story with me of seeing Tutu in the 1980s and its impact on her family, life, and career. She wrote:
“As I think about Archbishop Tutu this week, I am reminded of how formative it was for me to encounter him when I was young and just beginning to discern my own sense of purpose. I think my commitment to the power of a diverse community coming together to act for the common good, and the greater good, has something to do with what I learned then.
Now, as I think about my sense of purpose at the turn of the new year and my renewed fire to work for the common good, I am thinking of Tutu’s compassion, his humility, and above all his humor. These qualities undergirded his extraordinary agency and power, his ability to bring people together in community to inspire and affect change and healing.”
The world needs more voices that remind us of our humanity, our compassion, and the power of a commitment to the common good. At Belmont Day, we aspire to be those voices together.

Layering Up for Winter in New England
After a warm start to winter, the cold and snowy weather is finally upon us here in New England. We offer this reminder to have your child well-prepared for variable weather, from wet and chilly to sunny and unseasonably warm (often on the same day!) A good rule of thumb is that it is easier to take an extra layer off when the sun comes out than to search for an extra layer when the clouds and wind roll in.
All students, from pre-k through grade eight, joyfully participate in outdoor recess every day and we’ll have lunch and snack time outside as often as we can as well. In order to be safe and comfortable, your child should always have:
- A warm coat; a sweatshirt, fleece, or vest is not enough below 40 degrees
- A winter hat or hood
- Gloves or mittens
- Boots and snow pants; students without this gear will be unable to join their friends playing in the snow
- If you are able, it is a good idea to keep a set of outdoor gear in your child’s cubby/locker and to keep a set of spare clothing at school (no matter your child’s age) in case clothes become wet or muddy playing outside
Middle school athletes go outside year-round so they should have long pants/sweat pants available each day as well as appropriate gear for the weather.

Planning for Next Students of Color and Families Gathering
As you may recall, a faculty group has been working on designing opportunities throughout the year for students in all grades who identify as students of color to meet and spend time with one another. We had a small gathering before school started to welcome new students of color to our community. We are excited to host another event this winter—this time around, we would like to invite all students of color at BDS and their families to join us!
In order to get a sense of families’ interests and location preferences, we have crafted a short survey. If your child identifies as a student of color and you would like to participate in this outdoor gathering, please fill out the survey by Tuesday, January 18. We will announce our final plans by the end of the month. We are hoping to meet during a weekend in early February—of course, we will continue to be mindful of COVID-19 conditions in the next few weeks that may impact our plans to gather.
Thank you! Please reach out to any of us with questions or to share your ideas.

Athletics Update: Fencing Pivots to Intramural Meet
Despite the two-week pause on interscholastic competition, the Blue & Gold fencing team took to the strips this Thursday and squared off in an intramural meet. Under the direction of Coach Solomon, the team competed in all three weapons. With a large percentage of sixth grade athletes on the roster, this was the first competitive experience for the majority of the team. Classmates Zach Cash, Ariel Duan, Ayres Planck, Simon Wright, and Lucy Yin have been improving steadily over the course of the season and are excited to square off against “real” opponents sometime soon. The team hopes to get back at it the week of January 17 and will continue to train hard in the meantime.
