The Surest Signs of Spring at Belmont Day
By Brendan Largay, Head of School
Post Date: March 20, 2026
“When one flower blooms, spring awakens everywhere.” – John O’Donohue
Students will begin visiting the Belmont Day garden again next week. After a winter of dormancy, hints of life are returning to one of our most cherished spaces on campus. With spring parent conferences also next week, it’s hard not to see the garden’s reawakening as a reflection of our students’ own growth over these past months.
One of the great myths of winter is that a garden is lifeless, waiting only for spring to begin again. In truth, dormancy is anything but stillness. Beneath the surface, roots deepen, nutrients are stored, and complex systems quietly prepare for renewal. What appears inactive is, in fact, a period of essential development.
The same is true for our students.
While winter may bring fewer visible markers of progress–shorter days, long stretches between major events, and the quiet rhythm of daily school life –this season is often when some of the most meaningful growth takes place. Skills are strengthened, confidence takes root, and ideas begin to take shape. Much like the garden, the transformation is happening below the surface, out of immediate view, but no less real or important.
When we “wake” the garden in spring, we don’t start from scratch; we uncover what has already been happening. Seeds planted months ago begin to emerge, nourished by the unseen work of winter. In the same way, spring conferences offer a moment to recognize the results of the steady, often invisible growth of a child since the beginning of the year.
Think back to those fall conferences: conversations filled with anticipation. How will they adjust? What milestones lie ahead? What will growth look like this year? Winter has been the season in which many of those questions have quietly found their answers.
Now, as spring arrives, we begin to see the evidence. Students step forward with greater independence, deeper understanding, and a readiness to share their learning. Celebrated culminating experiences –State Fair projects, Greek Festivals, portfolio shares, and Capstone– are not sudden bursts of achievement, but the natural blossoming of months of careful cultivation. Like a garden coming into bloom, they reveal what has been developing all along.
So, as you approach these conferences, we invite you to do so with the perspective of a gardener in spring: curious, attentive, and open to surprise. Look closely at what has taken root over the winter months. Notice the ways in which rigor, care, and challenge have shaped your child’s growth. And take joy in the emergence of something that, not long ago, was still hidden beneath the surface.
Spring has arrived at Belmont Day. After a season of quiet growth, we are excited to share with you all that is now beginning to bloom.

Departures
Abbey Nyland, physical education teacher
At the end of the school year, we will be saying farewell to Abbey Nyland, a deeply valued member of the Belmont Day community whose impact will be felt for years to come.
Abbey has been a member of our community for the past eight school years and has served as an exceptional teacher, coach, and role model for our students, bringing energy, care, and purpose to everything she does. Abbey consistently creates an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired, and she has a natural ability to connect with students and bring out their very best.
A fierce advocate for students, Abbey has been deeply committed to the growth and development of physical education and athletics at Belmont Day. She has helped shape a program that prioritizes inclusivity, skill development, teamwork, and joy. Most recently, she also served as an admissions liaison, playing an important role in welcoming new families and sharing the spirit of Belmont Day with prospective students.
Abbey’s impact on our community will be lasting, and she will be greatly missed by students, colleagues, and families alike. We are grateful for all she has given to Belmont Day and wish her continued success and happiness in her next chapter.

Learning Updates
Pre-K Students Build Beautiful Terraiums
Just in time for spring, our pre-kindergarten students built terrariums in their classroom this week. Their yearlong exploration of growing cycles began with their digging of potatoes in the fall, and in the winter, they grew mushrooms on a substrate in the classroom. Recently, they have been learning about green spaces in urban areas and crafted mini city models that included green spaces.
On Wednesday, they created miniature gardens in glass jars for their classroom. Layering pebbles, soil, and a variety of plants with moss and decorative shells, they built a series of self-contained plant habitats. As the spring arrives, more explorations with growing and planting will unfold with the pre-kindergarten students.

Athletics Update: New Season Springs Into Action
There is a renewed sense of energy and excitement on campus as we officially kick off the spring athletics season. After a long winter, the recent stretch of warmer weather has melted away the snow and allowed us to get back outside on our fields, which has been a welcome sight for our student-athletes and coaches alike.
This spring, Belmont Day will field teams in boys’ varsity lacrosse, girls’ JV and varsity lacrosse, JV and varsity tennis, track & field, varsity ultimate, and mountain biking. It is an exciting and diverse lineup of offerings, providing opportunities for students to compete, grow, and challenge themselves in a variety of settings.
The season got off to a strong start this week. Both girls’ lacrosse and tennis held tryouts over the first three days, while our other teams jumped right into practices. Across all programs, students have been working hard, learning new systems, and building the foundations for a successful season.
As we head into next week, teams will continue to focus on developing team chemistry, establishing routines, and preparing for the start of competition. It is always an exciting time of year, and we are looking forward to seeing our student-athletes grow and thrive throughout the spring season.
– Stephen Marks, director of athletics
