Opening Message
Strategic Planning: Committing to the Climb
By Annie Fuerst, Director of Innovation
Post Date: May 1, 2026
This time last week, I was in Golden, Colorado, surrounded by mountains.
I was there for the closing meetings of my Leadership + Design Fellowship, a year spent learning alongside school leaders from across the country. During our wrap-up sessions, and really throughout the entire year, we kept returning to a central question: what does it mean to lead toward a future that doesn’t fully exist yet?
It’s easy, in these moments, to focus on the summits–the bold visions, the big ideas, the “next” thing.
But as I stood with my cohort, looking out at what felt like an endless mountain skyline, my mind turned to something more fundamental. While there is no shortage of bold directions we can take, what matters is choosing one that aligns with who you are and committing to the climb.
That idea was reinforced again and again throughout the fellowship, especially through a set of shared norms: be more curious than certain, listen to understand, and share freely, hold lightly. These are not just good habits. They make it possible to build something bold without losing what matters most along the way.
While the fellowship has come to a close, that learning continues here at Belmont Day. We are fortunate to be partnering with Antonio Viva and the Leadership + Design team as we begin Belmont Day School’s strategic planning process in anticipation of our centennial.
A centennial year invites us to think expansively about who we are and who we want to become. It is a chance to imagine a future for Belmont Day School that is both ambitious and deeply grounded in our values. At the same time, it can be tempting in a moment like this to rush toward solutions, to name priorities quickly, and to begin building the plan.
Instead, our design team has started by getting curious.
We’re approaching the school as anthropologists, paying close attention to signals that suggest the future is already taking shape in small but meaningful ways. We have begun conducting interviews across our community, not to confirm what we think we know, but to listen for what we might be missing and to expand our perspective.
That kind of listening is essential. Not every opportunity is the right one, and not every path is ours to take. Part of this work is identifying what truly differentiates Belmont Day, where our values, program, and community come together in distinctive, powerful ways. From there, we can choose to invest in those areas with intention.
This work, however, cannot and should not be done by a small group alone. Your voice matters, and we need to hear it.
On Friday, May 15, at 8:30 a.m. in Coolidge Hall, we are partnering with the parents’ association to host a Family Think Tank as part of this process. Please join us for this opportunity to step into this vital work and share your insights, questions, and hopes for the future of Belmont Day School.
There are many directions we could go, and many peaks we could aim for. Our goal is not simply to choose something bold, but to choose a direction that reflects who we are at our best. From there, we can begin the climb together, with purpose and care.

AUXILIARY PROGRAMS
April Vacation Campers Go Mad for Science and Art
During the April break, the Belmont Day School campus transformed into a mad science laboratory, and our young lab rats and electrons explored everywhere with an eye for learning and fun. Ms. McWalter and Mr. Armstrong taught campers about volcanoes, earthquakes, and paleontology, and campers studied strawberry DNA and learned about watersheds in the outdoor classroom. We ended the week with a guest visit from Dr. Victor Von Doom (aka Mr. Armstrong), who gave campers an up-front seat to what a real mad scientist does in the lab. Particularly impressive was the wonder, curiosity, and inquiry that Mr. Amrstrong and Ms. McWalter nurtured during the week and the ways the campers committed to the experiments.
We also piloted an art camp, during which campers learned about various art media, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. Campers made giant trading cards, used oils to create dragonscapes, and made shrink plastic keychains. They worked with papier-mache and explored sewing, printmaking, and weaving. We were especially struck by Ms. Brown’s and Ms. Danahy’s ability to ignite a love of learning and creative design in the campers.
Thank you to everyone who made this past week’s camps so special.
– Blair Fross, director of school-year auxiliary and special programs

Learning Updates
Welcoming Our Feather Friends Back to Campus
Chicka-dee-dee-dee! Local birds are beginning to migrate back to the Gallery as year three of our school-wide birding project gets underway. Students throughout the school will help us collect and visualize data on bird calls detected by our Haikubox, helping us all learn more about the nature around us, how nature and technology can interact, and the limitations of technology and artificial intelligence in this context. And, of course, it helps us all to build a good deal of excitement about birding. If you’d like to join in from home, here are a few tips and resources to get started.
- Pick an Observation Spot: Choose one place outside, your backyard, a park bench, a nature path, or even a big window (we love birding through the windows of the Barn Conference Room)!
- Listen First: Many birds are heard before they’re seen. Try closing your eyes and tuning into the sounds. How many different calls can you notice?
- Bring a Notebook: Draw, list, or describe what you see and hear.
- Use a Field Guide (or App): Tools like the Merlin Bird ID app can help identify birds by sight and sound. It’s like having a bird expert in your pocket. Or bring a guidebook, such as the Sibley Guide to Birds.
- Participate in Global Big Day: On May 9, be a community scientist and report your bird observations to eBird! Your observations will help scientists better understand global bird populations–even 5 minutes of birding can help.
- Keep Track of the Birds at BDS: Our Haikubox data is live and available here if you’d like to follow along at home.
In the words of the Massachusetts Young Birding Club, “If you’re interested in birds and want to go out and look for them, congratulations: you’re a birder!” So have fun out there, BDS Birders!

Arts Update: Middle School Musicians Gaining Confidence
Seventh and eighth grade students are growing more comfortable stepping up to the mic and sharing their musical voices with their middle school peers. A few weeks ago, students in the Find Your Voice elective performed a group arrangement of the song “Rewrite the Stars” from the movie The Greatest Showman at the Middle School Meeting. Students from our audio technology class ran the soundboard for this event. In class this week, students performed solos and duets of folk and pop songs that told impactful stories, focusing on vocal elements like diction, breath support, and vibrato.
